Psychology states that if
something is experienced personally it becomes perceptually concrete. Lessons
learnt in the past leave concrete evidence in mind and thus create what we
define as intuition.
Dan Ariely was being treated in
the hospital where he experienced the pain while being bandaged by the nurse. The
nurse felt that removing the bandage with greater intensity in lesser time was
much better way to lessen the pain. Dan experimented and came up with the
conclusion that “we don’t encode duration in the way we encode intensity.” Dan thought if it’s only about the nurses
doing it the wrong way or it’s more general. Enron case made him realize that the
tendency to commit mistakes is general and such irrational behavior are more
often found. Cheating as explained further is one such irrationality he found.
Various experiment led to various
conclusions and several expected outcomes were denied as well. Dan realized
that cheating is based on a simple cost benefit analysis. He felt that when the amount of money was more
people would cheat more but this was not the case. He stated that there are two
force one that what extent we can do wrong and feel good about ourselves and
the one where we look into the mirror and think good about ourselves and thus
there's a fudge factor between the two. When people are reminded of the
fundamentals the extent of cheating was less. When we swear of something we
hesitate to do something wrong. Past experience builds intuition and intuitions
are what drive most people to act. Dan felt that what we observe around us and
what we have learnt in the past leads us to decide whether to do or not.
As many feel and also act
according to intuitions developed by them. People feel it’s correct and thus do
the things. "Intuitions are senses of the soul which speak in a hidden
but stronger manner." Companies make policies, fundamentals are taught
in syllabi, religious preaching tell people to act wisely and correctly and
other lessons of the past acts as impediments to people to do wrong. It can be
taken as moral or social act which we develop within and act but the extent to
which we cheat or behave irrationally is our own personal.
